GREEN CYCLING ECO-CYCLO: A NEW PROGRAM

No, these green clad figures did not come from Mars. They come from the four corners of the world to ensure that the beautiful scenery in which we cycle is still there in the years to come. The EcoCyclo Patrol was created in 2006 in France by initiative of one passionate cyclist name Patrick François. After too many negative experiences in seeing what’s left behind by participants of cyclosportives, he decided to recruit an “army” of volunteer cyclists to teach good environmental manners to their fellow participants.

In 2013 the Patrol gained UCI support, a new cycling kit and international exposure. As the reach of the UCI EcoCyclo Patrol keeps growing, more events in the UCI calendar are welcoming the initiative and leaving behind a much more positive footprint.

Green-clad figures can be seen amidst the peloton at an ever increasing number of Cycling for All (Cyclosport / Granfondo) events. Far from being strangers from Mars, these cyclists are part of the GREEN CYCLING ECO CYCLO Program which aims to encourage cyclists and event organisers to adopt environmentally friendly practices.

Green Cycling Eco Cyclo for universal, safe, healthy and responsible cycling

Cycling is a sport that inspires passion, involving no less than 181 national federations, hundreds of thousands of licensees and several millions of amateur cyclists and tourists. In daily life, bicycles are used as a means of transportation, used worldwide by over two billion people of all ages and social backgrounds.

Those numbers give some idea of the responsibility shared by all those involved in cycling : non governmental organisations (federations), public authorities, national and local associations,  technical and commercial partners.  All of them share a duty to ensurethe healthy and safe development of cycling -

Every one of them needs to share this responsibility and fulfil the required social, moral, economic and environmental obligations.

The mission: to promote access to cycling for all ; to protect and enhanceareas for cycling. The mission  istosupport all those involvedin cycling:

- within the diversity of  Cycling,

in national situations (developed and developing countries,

in land planning (conservation and development of existing zones, planning and managing safe cycling )

 - To allow them to take into account and fully assume their social and environmental responsibilities,

- To develop cycling for all,

- To generate responsible and ethical behavior in all cyclists

The Green Cycling Eco Cyclo vision is consistent with the position and actions initiated by the International Cyclist Union (UCI), the Olympic Movement (IOC) and the United Nations policies.

To reach these goals, Green Cycling Eco Cyclo has defined 4 fundamental pillars :

- Clean cycling : promotion of good eco-attitudein all cyclists. This means the proper eco-behavior of all participants and organizers and respect and care of the environment throughout the entire cycling life.

- Healthy cycling : Increasing the importance of cycling benefits in health policies, countering unhealthy behavior : doping , over training,

Safe cycling : Teaching cyclists to fully respect required regulations and adopt cautious behavior. Developing adequate regulations and infrastructures.

- Cycling for all : Teaching how to ride a bicycleat all ages, starting with children, through publicity, education or training.

The Green Cycling Eco Cyclo Program is open to all involved in the cycling world : sports communities and associations, technical and economic partners, national and local groups, individual and group cyclists. Two conditions are required :

1 To embrace the objectives and orientations of the Program,

2 To commit to support the Program and to engage in the promotion of healthy and responsible cycling through example.

THE GREEN CYCLING ECO CYCLO 2020 : plan andpilot operations:

In order to reach those objectives, Green Cycling will develop its «Action Plan 2020 concerning cycling for all -  safe, healthy and responsible ». For this purpose it will publish guide books and brochures, give recommendations, organize meetings and events for the participants and the general public, as has been done many times already by the Eco Cyclo Program *,

As of now The Green Cycling Eco Cyclo, during pilot operations, will support and sponsor organizations and initiatives willing to join the movement which fosters safe, healthy and responsible cycling.

* The Eco Cyclo Program has been awarded in 2014 by a Diploma of the International Olympic Commitee.
