Sometimes when you’re thinking Green you actually see Red.
The environment is to be enjoyed, used in a sustainable way, to be protected for use by generations that we don’t even know yet. With a green eye and a green spirit we could mistake other users for the devil and believe they seek to trash and use nature for their own benefit.
The UCI EcoCyclo patrol is the Green Gang. An international band of volunteers that through cycling and participation in grand scale cycling events such as the UCI World Tour, Cyclosportives and GranFondos promote environmental awareness and eco-friendly actions.
When you see Red, the Green Gang see opportunity!
With the support of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the French Cycling Federation (FFC), the Association Européenne de Cyclosport (AEC) it’s been possible to connect and collaborate with event organizers, promoters and managers around the world to implement immediate changes that develop long-term benefits.
By seeing green instead of red, the UCI EcoCyclo movement has built relationships and worked with many stakeholders and groups to introduce an ecological attitude, sustainable practices, waste reduction and a community spirit that sees tens of thousands of competitors and participants invited back to those beautiful roads, forests, mountains and natural environments again and again all over the world.
With the example of a refreshed outlook and discipline by Professional cyclists, event riders now place used gel wrappers back in their pockets or dispose of them at specific locations. No kangaroo, deer, goat or sheep has been seen since with a gel or carbohydrate shot hanging from its teeth.
The year of 2014 will see even more kilometres cycled pedal stroke after pedal stroke, there are new events on the calendar with the UCI World Tour expanding to Malaysia and Mexico and the amount of green you see will be magnified even further.
The next time you’re out training on your bike or participating in your dream Granfondo or cyclosportif, look out for a member of the Green Gang and say hello!
After all, they might even introduce you to the devil.
